The EU wine market is heavily regulated. Despite the many distortions in the wine market as a consequence, refirming the regulations has proven difficult. This paper analyses the political economy mechanism that created the existing set of wine regulations. We document the historical origins of the regulations and relate these to political pressures that resulted from international integration, technological innovations and economic developments.

BRICS are on the rise in the world economy, and indeed this fact has a reflection on Africa in terms of growing engagement with the region. The effects of these increasing trade, investment, and aid flows on the development prospects of Africa are a key issue in the political economy of the continent. This article pays attention to a specific case of this growing presence: India in Senegal. Based on fieldwork in Senegal, we present and analyse the features of the Indian presence in the country, and assess the possible developmental impact in terms of contribution to economic development.

We provide economy-wide modeling results of the national and regional implications of two current challenges facing the Australian wine industry: a decline in export demand for premium wines, and a possible change in the tax on domestic wine sales following the Henry Review of Taxation. The demand shock causes regional GDP to fall in the cool and warm wine regions but not in the hot wine regions unless the shock is large. A change from the current ad valorem tax to a similarly low volumetric tax on domestic wine sales causes regional GDP to rise in the cool and warm wine regions, partly offsetting its fall due to the export demand shock; but GDP in the hot wine regions would fall substantially. The switch to a volumetric tax as high as the standard beer rate would raise tax revenue and lower domestic wine consumption by more than one-third, but would induce a one-third decrease in production of non-premium wine as its consumer price would rise by at least three-quarters (while the average price of super premium wines would change very little), hence exacerbating the difference in effects of a tax reform on hot versus warm and cool wine regions' GDP

In the last decades, the concept of sustainability has driven many industries into a reconfiguration of their operations to reduce environmental impact. Accordingly, governments and public institutions are shaping the boundaries for new regulations, especially in the agriculture sector. Wine production is a major global industry, and its interest in becoming greener and more sustainable is growing. Since most of the wastes in the wine industry are attributable to organic composition, people share the belief that these wastes are not dangerous for the environment. However, the waste proportion in wine production is significant, reaching a 2:1 ratio, which means that for every two bottles of wine produced, the companies must discard a "bottle of waste". This study concerns the winemaking process and the possibility to implement Circular Economy (CE) practices in it. The paper also shows several applications of circular economy in the wine sector, identifying benefits, drivers and actions that can lead towards more sustainable business models.
